In August, President Trump announced billions of new dollars would be invested by private companies to restore domestic manufacturing. He reiterated that restoring American manufacturing isn’t just about jobs, it’s about national security. When we bring factories and supply chains home, we are protecting our country from foreign threats and ensuring that Americans are never again left vulnerable in a crisis.
Our continued advocacy for America’s critical medical supply chain is at the forefront of advancing public health security and economic strength.
Over the past year, there has been a notable surge in major investments across the U.S. medical manufacturing sector, with billions committed to new domestic facilities, research, workforce development, and expansion of domestic production lines. This growing momentum demonstrates renewed confidence in American industry and a collective determination to strengthen our nation’s capacity to produce medical products and personal protective equipment at scale.
Recent federal policy actions will further reshape our trade environment and provide new opportunities for domestic producers. With the immediate suspension of the de minimis exemption for low-value imports, all international shipments, regardless of value, will now be subject to targeted tariffs and customs oversight. This action helps level the playing field for American manufacturers by preventing foreign competitors from sidestepping established duties and regulatory standards.
Looking ahead, Congress is exploring how to further restrict de minimis treatment, introduce tighter import controls, hold bad global actors accountable, and enact new trade reforms. The overall focus is on enhancing domestic supply chain resilience, incentivizing substantial investment, and safeguarding American jobs and innovation in medical manufacturing.
Congress will be in session this Fall and with your participation AMMA will lend our voices and expertise to guide meaningful policy reforms that guarantee fair market access, prioritize U.S.-based sourcing, and foster an environment where domestic medical manufacturers can lead in quality, capacity, and preparedness.
